The awestruck passengers of a VW Polo got the surprise of their lives when an itch ridden elephant decided to relieve itself using the pint sized car. While trees and rocks usually suffice as adequate itching sticks, this lumbering giant decided that the roof and bonnet of the silver vehicle were a much better idea!

The extraordinary event occurred at Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa, where tourists are offered the chance to drive through the grounds and marvel at the resident animals. The amazing pictures were snapped by field guide and lodge manager, Armand Grobler. Apparently he wasn’t too worried about the bizarre situation, explaining “I was doing ethology – the study of animal behaviour – at the time, so I had a basic understanding of what was going on.”

Why scratch an itch on a tree when there’s a shiny new VW just waiting to be crushed?

Understandably, the occupants of the car didn’t quite feel the same way…

“The all-round emotion that was within our vehicle, as we watched in horror, was that we were rushed with adrenalin, yet terrified and helpless” they revealed.

According to Grobler, the elephant in question was experiencing a periodic hormonal condition called musth. During this time, male elephants undergo a surge of testosterone which turns even the most docile of elephants into feisty giants.

Thankfully, the extent of this male’s musth symptoms were itchy legs!

We hope the passengers didn’t have anything important in the boot!

“Yet even though it was in this condition, it displayed no signs of aggression or frustration and was in a more playful mood” said Grobler.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident however the car didn’t escape unscathed, suffering from blown tyres, a broken chassis and more!

“The car was not so lucky. From what we could see and hear, all the windows were smashed, the roof was badly dented and the entire top part of the car smashed” said Grobler.

It’s not hard to see why the car didn’t come out on top…

After wreaking a little havoc, the elephant continued calmly on his way, itch free and completely unaware of the shaken up passengers, ruined vehicle and fascinated lodge manager left in his wake!

Have you ever had a scary wild animal experience? We want to hear about it!
